2013 NAIAS: Audi RS5 Cabriolet [Live Photos]
The drop-top deserves its RS badge because it’s powered by the most powerful incarnation of the high-revving, naturally-aspirated 4,163cc V8 that Audi makes. In the US, the engine is rated at 444 horsepower and just the right amount of torque: 430 Nm (317 lb-ft) between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm.
What makes this better than any compact super-convertible in its class is the fact that it’s got a quattro all-wheel drive system at its disposal. Thanks to this, and the standard seven-speed dual-clutch S Tronic gearbox, the RS5 Cabrio will race from 0 to 62 mph in 4.9 seconds.
While the top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph (250 km/h), if requested, this can be boosted to 174 mph (280 km/h).
The RS5 has another trick that’s measured in seconds, its convertible roof that can be opened and closed in 15 and 17 seconds respectively at speeds of up to 31 mph (50 km/h).
That might seem trivial, but it really isn’t when you consider all the other sexy goodies it comes with, like the beefy light alloy wheels 19x9-inch at the front and 20-inch at the back. Behind them, a powerful braking system that uses ventilated and perforated discs, with the front ones measuring 365 mm (14.37 inches) and using 8 pistons.
The RS5 Cabrio might not be as mighty as the R8, but it has all the right ingredients to tickle your petrolhead bone. Nothing like a good drive through the mountains, the spring sun in your face and the sound of German V8 in your ear.
