Perfect race for Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo as the Spaniard triumphed at Misano, in the San Marino round, for his second consecutive win. Following his old recipe, the Cobra darted ahead the pack with an impeccable holeshot start and soon opened an increasingly bigger gap. Flawless!
With Yamaha debuting their "seamless" gearboxes at the GP Aperol di San Marino e Riviera di Rimini at Misano, and Lorenzo claiming the victory, we might just see a new chapter in the title battle, as the Spaniard climbed into the 2nd position in the world standing, with 219 points. He shares the position with Honda's Dani Pedrosa who finished third, but has less wins.
The championship leader is still Marc Marquez, with a 34-point lead. A somewhat comfortable advantage over the two riders behind him, but we just know a battle is never done when it comes to a determined Lorenzo all over his rear wheel.
5 rounds before the 2013 championship comes to an end, math starts playing a bigger role in the series, with Rossi and Crutchlow being the other two remaining riders which could mathematically battle for this season's podium. Rossi placed one more 4th position at Misano, while Crutchlow fell behind LCR Honda's Stefan Bradl into the 6th position.
Ducati's Dovizioso and Hayden were 7th and 8th, respectively, followed by Ben Spies' substitute, Michele Pirro for Pramac. Bad luck for the top CRT rider Aleix Espargaro, forced to take a penalty pass through the pit lane for jumping the start. He came in 13th , behind NGM's Colin Edwards.
Misano also saw a hefty, 6-rider DNF list comprising Staring, Barbera, Hernandez, Abraham, Pesek and Iannone.
Now that Yamaha's worst fears (of a failed transmisson) seem to have been washed away, we're looking forward to the next round at Motorland Aragon on Sunday 29 September.
