Chevrolet has announced two separate recalls for the 2013 and 2014 model year Malibu sedans over A/C software and electrical problems respectively.
According to GM, 2013 Malibu models equipped with eight-way power front seats are being recalled because the wiring harness could wear against the seat frame. This means the circuit could short out, which may result in "an open circuit breaker, unintended movement of the seat, sparking, flickering lights, melted wiring, smoke, or a fire in an unattended vehicle".
The automaker knows of two fires that broke out in unattended vehicles, but says no crashes or injuries have been reported. The recall affects 14,930 vehicles, of which 13 were sold in Canada and seven in Mexico.
Moving over to the 2014 Malibu, the control for the HVAC system (heating, ventilation and air-conditioning) may not work properly, which could prevent drivers from defrosting the windshield. This problem affects 44,406 sedans - most sold in the US, 1,034 in Canada and 676 in Mexico.
Chevrolet hasn't given a timetable for these recalls, but says the owners will be notified to take their vehicles to a company dealer and have them inspected and repaired free of charge.
