Using electric cars to race is a novel idea, but one that’s beginning to catch on. There’s rumors of a Formula One spinoff series, and EVs have proven their worth at the Pikes Peak Hill Climb this year.
However, a company that created an electric BMW M for Pikes Peak, EV West, has also built a custom electric off-road vehicle for the famous Baja race in Mexico. It’s called the EV1 SRI Electric Baja Racer.
The car is actually a partnership between many companies who specialize in racing technology and was built by Strategic Racing with suspension from Bilstein.
The EV1 is powered by two WarP electric motors rated at a combined 400 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque. The motors are placed over the back wheels for traction and have four cooling stacks to draw in air with filters at the top. The five packs of Flux Power batteries provide adequate range to finish the legendary rally.
