Porsche has finally unveiled a new 911 convertible based on the 991 platform, and the big news is that it debuts next year with a brand new and innovative roof design. On sale in March 2012, the 911 Cabriolet will be offered both as a Carrera base model and as a 400 hp Carrera S.
Using a semi-rigid structure underneath the cloth, the designers managed to create the iconic 911 roofline in the Cabriolet for the first time. Magnesium was used in the frame to keep the weight down.
As is the case with the Coupe model, the new 911 Cabriolet is significantly lighter overall than its predecessor. It’s also got a longer wheelbase and better legroom inside.
On the engine front, we have the same two flat-six units as in the Coupe. The base Carrera offers a new 3.4-liter engine generating 350 hp (257 kW), driving the rear wheels through an all-new seven-speed manual transmission. The Carrera S Cabriolet offers a 3.8-liter engine developing 400 hp (294 kW), also coupled to a seven-speed manual transmission as standard.
Optionally, you could have the seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) double-clutch transmission that promises better acceleration times and fuel economy.
With the March 3rd market debut announced, you can be sure it will make its motor show debut at the Geneva Motor Show, but it might also drop at the 2012 Detroit Show.
