2012 Chevy Sonic (Aveo) Super Bowl Commercial: Bugs on Grill

How do you sell a car that’s small, not that fast and not that well known in the US market yet? Volkswagen would have been all “wir lieben autos” about it, and so Chevrolet is using “Chevy runs deep”, but in a less serious way than ever before.
In one of the five Super Bowl commercials this year, Chevrolet is focusing on the Sonic hatchback, their US-built pride and joy. The car is so fun to ride in, that a whole bunch of bugs congregate on the honeycomb grill for a few thrills. The punch line of “from 0 to.... Chevy runs deep” is affective in getting the message across that this isn’t a serious car for joyless people, it’s for people who’ve watched A Bug’s Life recently!

The only niggle we have with the ad is that it sounds like they used the same voice actor. But the animations are perfect and we love how the grasshopper puts his “hand” over the little ants eyes.

Mihnea's favorite cars have already been built, the so-called modern classics from the '80s and '90s. He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
