Finally, after months of teasing and forced by the images leaked earlier by German publication Auto Zeitung, the Bavarian automaker decided to indulge us with the official details and a huge image gallery of the much anticipated 2012 BMW M5.

As we previously mentioned, the fifth generation M5 will make use of a engine developing 560 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 501 lb-ft (680 Nm) of maximum torque. The power is transmitted to the rear wheels via the seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission Drivelogic.

This combination enables the new M5 to sprint to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.4 seconds. In order to reach 124 mph (200 km/h), the new M5 needs about 13 seconds. The top speed, however, is electronically limited to 155 mph (250 km/h), but the M Driver’s Package brings it up to 189 mph (305 km/h). In addition, the new M Drive buttons on the steering wheel allow for two individually configured set-ups.

However, the 10 percent increase in the power output could seem too little, but add that to the fact that the fuel consumption has dropped 30 percent to 9.9 l/100km (28.5 mpg imp), and the M5 instantly turns into one of the most desirable high-performance saloon out there. This is mostly thanks to the extensive Efficient Dynamics technology used, including Auto Start-Stop function and Brake Energy Regeneration.

Inside the car we find newly designed, leather-covered centre console; M sports seats, Merino leather upholstery with extended features, exclusive Aluminium Trace interior trim strips, BMW Individual roof liner in Anthracite, electrically operated steering column adjustment, four-zone automatic climate control and ambient light.

Available options include Comfort Access, M multifunction seats, active seats, doors with Soft Close Automatic function, hands-free tailgate opening, electric glass roof, and trailer coupling.

Also, in terms of driver assistance systems and mobility services, the new M5 comes with M-specific Head-Up Display (standard), Adaptive Headlights for standard xenon light, High-Beam Assistant, BMW Night Vision with pedestrian recognition, Lane Change Warning System, Lane Departure Warning System, Surround View, Speed Limit Info, internet usage, extended integration of smartphones and music players, real-time traffic information and apps for receiving Web Radio and using Facebook and Twitter.
