2012 BMW i8 Spyder Concept Photos Leaked

BMW must be feeling so confident the i8 will be a hit that they went ahead and decided to test the waters ti see if a convertible version will sell as well. And of course, since it’s got a BMW badge on it and looks like a convertible personal transportation pod from the Star Wars series, it will sell just fine.

The images you see are not the work of any graphics renderer with a Photoshop and a steady mouse hand, rather they are ‘actual’ photos made by BMW of a car they’ve already built. According to Autoforum.cz, who got hold of these leaked photos, the i8 Spyder will debut at the 2012 Auto China Show in Beijing, which starts near the end of April.

But this concept is closer to the production model than the coupe version shown in Frankfurt last year, since the doors are sold instead of being made of glass.

Powering the concept will be a plug-in hybrid system that uses a 1.5-liter turbo three-cylinder at the back and electric motor at the front. Combined output for the concept is supposed to be 349 horsepower, though when it goes into production this should be more like 390 hp. The car will be able to run in all-electric mode, all petrol mode as a RWD, and as an AWD hybrid.
