BMW has finally revealed their brand new 3-Series, their most important high-volume model for the global market. Over 12 million models have been sold since the car made its debut in 1975, and the carmaker’s Chairman says he is confident the new one will be a resounding success.
The biggest changes brought by the F30 generation, which will be available in early February, are substantial overall increases in proportions and the introduction of smaller, a more elegant design and more frugal engines. The world’s most successful premium vehicle will also see its first mass-market hybrid version in Autumn 2012, the ActiveHybrid 3.

BMW says that the market launch will be made with the 328i and 335i models with petrol engine and the 320d and 320d EfficientDynamics diesel variants, with prices in Europe to vary between €35,350 for the 320d and 43,600 for the 335i.

The 320d version of the car now has 184 horsepower at 4,000 rpm and 380 Nm (280.25 lb-ft) of peak torque. This is enough to push the car from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 146 mph (235 km/h). Combined fuel consumption sits at 52.27 mpg US (4.5 L/100Km), while CO2 emissions are 117 g/km. The EfficientDynamics version of the same 2.0-liter diesel only produces 163 hp, but it emits 109 g/km, which should come in handy for business owners having to deal with emissions taxes.

The petrol range consists now includes the new 2.0-liter with BMW TwinPower Turbo, High Precision Direct Petrol Injection, fully variable valve control. This engine has produces 245 hp and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) or peak torque at 4,800 rpm. The 0 to 100 km/h time is 5.9 seconds, while top speed is the same electronically limited 250 km/h (155 mph).

Until the new M3 arrives, probably around this time next year, the most powerful 3-Series will still be the 306 hp 335i that uses a 3.0-liter straight-six with BMW TwinPower Turbo, High Precision Direct Petrol Injection, fully variable valve control. This can do the standard sprint in 5.5 seconds and is also limited to 250 km/h (155 mph).
