Malaysia’s biggest carmaker has just announced a new version of their Alza MPV. Called the Perodua Alza Exclusive Edition, it will see limited production and should arrive this Summer.
The car is built to commemorate the visit of former Malaysia Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohama, his first in a decade, to Perodua’s manufacturing plants. The company has built two such models before, the Perodua Viva Elite Exclusive Edition and the Perodua Myvi Limited Edition, but unlike them, the Alza will be limited to just 500 units.
Pricing and equipment levels have not been released and are expected closer to the car’s launch. However, buyers can expect some visual differentiation, more colors and interior updates for a slight increase in price. It should come with the same exclusive Classy Purple metallic color, in addition to the existing Ivory White solid color.
Currently, the Perodua Alza is available in 6 variants: Standard (SX, EZ), Premium (SXi, EZi) and Advanced (GHP, ZHP) with the option of 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission. They all use a de-tuned version of the 1.5-liter engine in the Toyota Avanza and Daihatsu, which churns out only 104 hp at 6,000 rpm and 136Nm (100 lb-ft) of torque at 4,400 rpm.
The car was named from a Spanish verb, alzar, meaning 'to raise'. This was decided following an internal competition held among Perodua's staff during the development phase.
The carmaker has promised to donate MYR1,000 ($326) for every unit of the Alza Exclusive Edition sold, raising MYR500,000 ($163,000) for the Perdana Leadership Foundation. Perodua also encourages individual buyers and corporations to donate, by buying the special edition Alza at a premium over the finalized price.
