Marking the 20th anniversary of the Legacy Tourer, Japanese carmaker Subaru has just launched the fifth-generation version of the model in the UK market, with a new exterior and interior design, comfort, dynamics and safety features. In fact, the car’s safety equipment brought it a five-star Euro NCAP crash safety rating.

The car is 50 mm wider, 65 mm taller and 55 mm longer than its predecessor, and has been fitted with Horizontally-Opposed ‘Boxer’ engine and Symmetrical AWD (All-Wheel-Drive).

A choice of two engines is available, namely the 2.0-liter diesel or 2.5-liter petrol. The first is mated to a standard six-speed manual unit, while the latter benefits from the new in-house developed ‘Lineartronic’ automatic transmission, a fully automatic continuously variable transmission (CVT)-type unit that enables the engine to operate continuously at the most efficient part of its rev-range.

As for the car’s performances, the top speed for the diesel-powered model is 120 mph (193 km/h), and it sprints from naught to sixty in 9.6 seconds. Which is quite acceptable for a family car... Fuel economy is rated at 46.3mpg (combined cycle) and its CO2 emissions figure is 161g/km.

The 2.5-liter four-cylinder petrol unit generates a maximum output of 167 ps and torque of 229Nm at 4,000rpm. By adopting the i-Active Valve Lift System (i-AVLS), combined with the new Lineartronic automatic transmission, top speed for the automatic model is 120mph with a 0-62mph time of 10.3 seconds.

“The fifth-generation Legacy Tourer is a flagship model and a new technical benchmark for Subaru,” explains Paul Tunnicliffe, Subaru’s UK Managing Director. “Our vehicles are designed to be different from other cars, and the new Legacy has been conceived to take on premium-brand rivals with a unique blend of attributes. Its arrival marks the latest stage in the resurgence of the Subaru brand in the UK, and it is a very fitting way of celebrating the 20th anniversary of the first Legacy.”

Pricing starts at £23,295 for the 2.0D S, and goes up to £27,295 for the 2.5i SE NavPlus Lineartronic.
