Just this weekend the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued recall number 15V147 regarding a faulty inflator on X5 models. It seems like BMW isn't out of the woods just yet as the number 15V148 recall is calling another 2,067 Bimmers back to their local dealerships.
It looks like the Germans simply can't get their airbag act together, this new action issued by the NHTSA focusing on the same faults. According to them, the recalled 4 Series models fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208. Quite official, right?

What that means is that due to a programming error, the driver's front airbag deployment timing may be incorrect, resulting in an increased risk of personal injury. Of course, that's all true in case of a vehicle crash not if your car is just standing by.

It seems very fishy, to be honest. That's because a similar issue was reported for the X5 Head Restraint Protection system. However, in that case, the NHTSA reported that the fault did not lie in programming but in a bad contact between connectors that could also lead to the airbags not being inflated properly.

Fortunately, only the 4 Series Convertible models are affected by this recall. Unfortunately, all of the 2015 model year models are included. That means the 428i, 435i and the xDrive alternatives, all of them manufactured between October 22, 2014, and February 27, 2015.

As usual, BMW will notify the owners and the recall is expected to kick off in April. Fixing the issue will be done via new software so nothing will be taken off of your car.
