Can-Am has surfaced their latest addition to the Maverick family, the X ds, available in 1000R and 1000R Turbo flavors, machines which are clearly going to make the battle with the eternal Polaris RZR rivals more interesting.
The new turbo beast is capable to produce a maximum of 121 horsepower, which is a truly outstanding figure for a standard-trim SxS. Both versions have a 976cc SOHC v-twin engine with 4 valves per cylinder, but the turbo one is supplied with an intercooler and a high-performance Donaldson air filter. High-capacity Siemens VDO injectors are loaded in 54mm throttle bodies and Can-Am says that the power delivery has been improved for less lag.
Transmission is automatic, with L/H/N/R/P lever positions, selectable WD and 4WD and Visco-Lok auto-locking front differential. Airflow through the system has also been improved by 68 percent for a more reliable CVT operation.
The rear suspension is all-new, with a longer rear end, with torsional trailing A-arms, 5-link design and 16 inches () of travel. Fox 2.5 Podium RC2 shocks are standard, and they have been equipped with a multitude of adjustments, such as dual-speed compression, rebound, spring crossover for the dual-rate coils and a bottom out control.
Three-way dynamic power steering, Maxxis tires, new 14” aluminium beadlock rims and a rider-focused, ergonomic way of building the cockpit also come as standard. Both the 1000R and the 1000R Turbo will be available in 2-up and 4-up versions, with the base price starting at $19,499 (€15,060).
