When the Model S hit the market with plenty of pomp and circumstance, the 60 kWh battery was a must-have. A handful of years subsequent to that moment, Tesla has managed to shoehorn a 100 kWh battery in the Model S. And the Model X.
I don’t know how to break it in a more artistic manner, so here goes nothing: ladies and gentlemen, please put your hands together for the quickest production car and production SUV the world has ever seen!
These titles go to the Tesla Model S P100D with the ludicrously quick Ludicrous mode and Model X P100D with the said mode. Curious how much these babies will set you back? For the most badass Model S available nowadays, Elon Musk will charge you $134,500. For the top-of-the-line Model X, the sticker reads $135,500. And that’s a lot of money, mind you.
This being Tesla, the outfit wants “to emphasize that every sale helps pay for the smaller and much more affordable Tesla Model 3 that is in development. Without customers willing to buy the expensive Model S and X, we would be unable to fund the smaller, more affordable Model 3 development.”
And now, let’s go through the stats. In the case Model S P100D with Ludicrous mode, the EPA-estimated range stands at 315 miles (507 kilometers). 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) is doable in just 2.5 seconds, 62 mph (100 km/h) arrives in 2.7 seconds, and that’s about it. For the Model X P100D with Ludicrous, Tesla Motors quotes 2.9 seconds to 60 mph, 3.1 seconds to 62 mph, and an EPA-estimated range of 289 miles (465 kilometers).
Existing P90D with Ludicrous owners can upgrade their Model S and Model X electric vehicles to P100D specifications for a mind-boggling $20,000. Half of that will go on recycling the old 90 kWh battery pack, apparently. For Tesla Motors customers who have ordered a P90D with Ludicrous mode but have not taken delivery yet, the carmaker gives them the opportunity to upgrade to 100 kWh for $10,000.
For the first time ever in the Model S, Tesla Motors now offers the Premium Seats of the Model X on Performance cars (P90D and P100D). The ventilated front seats wrapped in black or tan leather are included in the Premium Upgrades Package, which costs $3,500.
