Ride a Tron Light Cycle in the Oculus Rift Virtual World

Those who are old enough and remember being mesmerized by the virtual world in the original movie Tron will surely be thrilled to learn that riding a Light Cycle in that abstract environment is now not only possible, but available, too.
Gaming legend Luis Sobral also known as the Arcade Man, has finally transformed his dream in reality, taking a new step into the world of arcade gaming with his new project RiftCycles. He recently introduced his new Light Cycle simulator prototype at the SAPO Codebits conference in Lisbon, Portugal and we might just see this kit spreading around the world soon.

Basically, he used the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset DK1 to integrate the Light Cycle dinamics, handling and operation with the gaming environments and realized a prototype bike which apparently can simulate the Tron virtual ride quite neatly.

Still in an early development stage, the RiftCycles Project has already caught a lot of attention. The whole project uses the Unity game platform created by the Portuguese house Overflow Interactive, and it provides a very solid base for further developments. The Light Cycle simulator was built from scratch and we might get to see better results shortly, especially as Oculus Rift surfaced their new Developer Kit 2 virtual reality headset.

So it may be that we won’t have to wait too long until VR changes the way we experience motorcycle video games…
