“There is only a connection (with Red Bull) as a beverage partner,” manager Roberton told Finnish broadcaster MTV3, while making it clear that “we are talking with several teams and Red Bull is not among them.”
The suggestion that the 2007 Formula One champion might be headed the Red Bull way next season came after a number of puzzle pieces coming together. First, Roberton admitted that he is currently in talks even with teams known to have no vacancies for 2010. That led to Red Bull, as the British team is the only one in the paddock to have confirmed its lineup for the 2010 season – except for Ferrari, from which Kimi departed in the first place.
Secondly, Kimi stated a number of times that he will only continue his F1 career on board of a title winning car. The Adrian Newey-designed RB5 would certainly fit that description, and the chances of its successor – the RB6 – to continue its success in the series as very good, considering the team is also on the verge of signing Mercedes as their new engine partner.
With Red Bull out of the way, however, Raikkonen's best chances of landing a job next year now rest in McLaren Mercedes and Toyota. Both teams have expressed their desire to offer a seat to Kimi, but the Finnish driver seems more inclined to return to Woking for 2010. A final decision is not expected until the Brazilian Grand Prix, next week.
