Nissan Murano Convertible to Launch in 2011

The convertible version of the Nissan Murano, perhaps one of the most daring auto experiments in recent years, has been already rumored to be on Nissan's drawing table for years now. The latest news concerning the model comes from a Nissan retailer who was indiscreet enough to put Autoweek up to date with what's what.

According to the source, citing the aforementioned retailer, the convertible Murano presented by Nissan at a private event in Las Vegas will hit the streets next year, in the form of a two-door convertible.

The strange experiment attempted by Nissan will not turn into a mass production vehicle, however. According to the carmaker's North America vice president, Brian Carolin, the drop-top Murano will be more of a "look what we can do" car.

"It's not going to be a volume car," Carolin was quoted as saying by the source. "But there's a degree of bravery for us to bring out a car like that right now. It will surprise a lot of people."

According to the limited information available so far, the car will use a traditional soft top, not necessarily because it looks better, but because it's cheaper. The ones which were lucky enough to see it say it's quite unusual (really?) and that it looks better with the top down than with it on.

The convertible is expected to use a 3.5l V6 engine, good for 265 horsepower. The engine will be mated to a Nissan CVT, with both front- and all-wheel drive systems to be developed.
