With only a few months left before the Leaf electric vehicle hits the market, the Japanese who manufacture it, Nissan, are still fighting to secure a good place for the vehicle in the market. The latest such move comes from the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, where Nissan went to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to ease the vehicle's entrance in the region.
It is the first such agreement signed in the Arab region by Nissan, one which is hoped will open many other opportunities there. The MoU will allow Nissan to promote electric vehicles as an alternative means of transportation in a region which was built on oil.
"I firmly believe we have an obligation to our future generations to take the necessary actions towards a greener and better world,” said Hazem Malhas, Jordan's minister of Environment.
“The introduction of electric cars offers many advantages, not only for the environment, but also from an economic, social and national security perspective."
The two sides will set up a working group whose main tasks will be the implementation of an Electric Vehicle Pilot Program. It's goal, as said, will be promoting the electric Leaf and its benefits. The kingdom is now pondering the purchase of 300 Leafs and the creation of the standards which will govern the EV world.
"Nissan applauds the Kingdom of Jordan for its vision and strong commitment to sustainable mobility,” added Gilles Normand, Nissan corporate vice president. “We are pleased that Jordan and its peoples share in our vision to make zero emission mobility a reality."
