Megane, Corsa Lead Top of MOT Fails

Owning a Renault Megane or an Opel/Vauxhall Corsa might be a good idea in the short term, but may turn into something of a nightmare after say three years of operation. This is at least the conclusion of a chart which shows what models have the bad habit of failing their first Ministry of Transport test (MOT - vehicle check compulsory for all vehicles over 3 years old and registered in the UK).

The winner of this unwanted title is, as you've figured it out by now, the French built Megane. The research, conducted by one of UK's largest MOTs, Nationwide Autocentres, found that 25 percent of all Meganes brought in last year (341 units came in for testing) failed for one reason or another.

The second place in this chart belongs to the Vauxhall Corsa, which ranks in with a 20 percent failure rate (a lot more models tested though, 576). The best performing three year old model, if it can be called that, is the BMW 3 Series, with only 7 percent of the 304 units tested having failed.

For the five year MOT, the car which stands out as the worst performer is the Vauxhall Corsa. In its case, the five year MOT test showed that 39 percent of these cars fail. The Megane switches places with the Corsa and follows closely behind with 35 percent failure rate.

The research has been conducted as part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the MOT. It's conclusions? Regularly maintenance can help avoid a MOT failure.
