GM Recalls 240,000 Crossovers

American manufacturer GM announced today it is recalling no less than 243,403 vehicles to fix a potential problem with the second-row safety belts, a problem which in some cases may “make an occupant think the belt is properly latched when it isn’t.

The models affected by the recall are Chevrolet Traverse, Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook models (243,403 units) manufactured in between 2009 and 2010 and sold in Canada, Mexico, China and Saudi Arabia. According to GM's initial findings, the models present damaged second-row safety belt buckles.

In some cases the second-row seat side trim shield restricts the upward rotation of the seat belt buckle when the seat back is returned to a seating position after being folded flat. In most cases, the buckle may receive cosmetic damage as the seat back is being returned to its upright position.

This damage might in turn translate into additional effort to return the seat to a seating position.

The faults were discovered during warranty returns and, although no reports of the second-row safety belts failing during a crash were received, GM decided to play it safe.

“Because of the potential for a false-latch condition, we want customers to return their vehicles to have the recall repair performed as soon as possible,” said Jeff Boyer, GM executive director of safety.

According to GM, letters informing owners of the recall will begin being sent this month, with the recall to begin soon after that. As usual in a recall situation, the necessary repairs and fixes will be performed at no extra charge.
