Black Sea Highway Gets Green Light from Russia

One of the biggest road building projects eastern Europe ever set out to complete was given the green light this week by Russian president Dmitry Medvedev, who signed the law which would allow Russia to build its segment of a huge highway.

The project involves all countries on the coast of the Black Sea (Turkey, Georgia, Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, Bulgaria and Greece) and its gargantuan is size. The future highway, which will go round the Black sea, will span for 7,140 km (4,436 miles) and will have four lanes in each direction.

There has been no date set yet for the beginning of construction. Each of the countries which take part in the project will be responsible with building the highway on their own territory, as well as connecting the existing roads to the new one.

“This concerns the development of a transport infrastructure that will provide an impetus to the expansion of the economic space and entrepreneurial initiatives. In any case, this is linked to a system the importance of which is impossible to assess now,” Nikita Maslennikov, expert at the Russian Institute of Contemporary Development was quoted as saying by ruvr.ru.

And if you think the huge Black Sea highway will keep these countries busy for years, you haven't heard about Russia's newest proposal: the construction of a Europe-Caucasus-Asia highway which will link France to China, passing through Belgium, Germany, Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan. The Black Sea highway will be a part of this huge network of roads.
