We believe that Renault has been working on the next generation Espace for at least five years now, and a concept version was even leaked in 2007, but the moment was not opportune to introduce a new MPV and so the French took their time and perfected the people-mover.
The test mule you see here is wearing the old body but is actually used by the engineers to play with a new suspension setup for the fifth-generation Espace. The current IV people carrier is supposed to be replaced this year, but the French are keeping tight-lipped. We hear it will offer design cues from the Laguna, with elongated headlights. The current generation has been on the market since 2002, and it got a facelift in 2007, so we’d say the Mk IV’s shelf life has expired.
One of the biggest changes over the current model will be the use of sliding doors, making access in the back easier in car parks.
