Jaguar is not the first brand you think about when it comes to safety during winter. The XKR, for example, is a brutish car that will spin you out at the first chance it gets. But, from time to time, they do try to tackle the snow and ice. For instance the old X-Type was available with all-wheel drive.
The spiritual successor to that Ford era car is this, the XS. Well, not exactly this, because it's a test mule. But Jaguar is indeed working on an entry-level saloon which they hope will rival the BMW 3 Series. Despite their best efforts, the company is trailing behind Audi, Mercedes and BMW even in the domestic British market.
Since BMW sells more 3 Series units than anything else, Jaguar is hoping the XS will be their best-seller as well.
This car is based on the new iQ[Al] modular platform and will likely share some of its engines with the Range Rover Evoque. Since tax levels are all-important in the company car market, there's likely a diesel version that gets under 100 km/h on the way.
The XS won't be ready until 2015, but you can check out the wheelbase or the car in our spyshots, taken in Sweden. The test mule, which makes use of XF body parts, has shorter overhangs than normal.
There isn't a single production body part on this mule, so we can't show you what the XS will look like. However, Jaguar design director Adrian Hallmark has hinted the F-Type will influence every model they make going forward.
