If you were looking at the all-new ML launched just last year and thinking “that’s the Merc I want... if only it had more room”, than we have good news. There’s also a new GL-Class coming soon, and it’s got a wagon-style body that’s better suited for large families on the go.
Our spy photographers have caught the most revealing shots of the next generation GL while it was testing in wintery Sweden. It’s wearing the least amount of camo to date, indicating that the vehicle is going into the late stages of fine-tuning before the launch later this year.
The grille only has two huge bars holding the trip-pointed star in the middle. Compared to the old GL, the headlight have become more angular. Round the back, the exhaust tips are not showing at all, though they will likely get cutaways when the SUV goes into production.
The engine range should come from the 2012 M-Class which this is based. Most markets will get the 3.5-liter V7 with over 300 hp in the GL350 and the 240 hp diesel in the BlueTec. There will of course be an AMG version with the new twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8, rated at 518 hp, mated to the usual seven-speed automatic.
