The Peugeot RD, winner of the 5th Peugeot design competition, got its first real-life sized model and went to China, to be displayed at the 2009 Shanghai Auto Show. The RD was Peugoet's choice out of the 2,500 projects submitted for the "Imagine the Peugeot in the Worldwide Megalopolis of Tomorrow" competition.
The RD was designed by Carlos Arturo Torres Tovar, a 27 year old Colombian and the main feature that turned it into a winner is the articulation system of the vehicle, giving the RD "irreproachable" road holding and the ability to "easily thread its way through urban traffic".
Peugeot describes the car as being "accessible, solid and extremely simply designed". The RD "fits perfectly with the complicated mobility constraints you would encounter in a megalopolis of the future".
Fit for a future car, the RD is powered by an electric motor. The unit propels a combination between a 3 wheeled scooter and a saloon car, despite the fact it is a single seater. Visually, the RD is striking by its large, panoramic windshield/roof.
Being designed to operate on the roads of tomorrow, the RD makes use of all of today's technologies: voice-message driving assistance and a heads-up display system that gives all the information required for safe travel.
The competition following which the RD got to leave for China debuted a year ago, with the "creative phase". Out of the over 2,500 entries, a jury selected only thirty worthy projects, which were submitted for on-line users and press voting.
Starting October, the manufacturer started production of a life-sized model, the same you can now see at the Shanghai Auto Show. The event in in itself drew more than 600,000 visitors on the Peugeot website, according to data posted by the French manufacturer.
