Mercedes Benz has just announced a new 4MATIC all-wheel drive system that will be make its debut on the CLA four-door coupe early next year, and will soon be offered on the other front-wheel drive vehicles they offer, like the A-Class and the upcoming GLA crossover.
The system’s focus is on combining efficiency with variable torque distribution for optimal performance. The 4MATIC all-wheel drive system will be 25 percent lighter than normal and will provide reduced friction levels.
The CLA and its cousins will be biased towards front-wheel drive, but if slip is sensed for even a couple of milliseconds, power is also diverted to the rear. Mercedes say the principle is that it cuts in “as often as necessary, as rarely as possible.”
All these AMG models we keep talking about, the A 45 AMG, CLA 45 AMG and potentially the GLA as well, will have the same seven-speed DCT. The CLA is most likely going to make its debut at the North American International Auto Show in mid-January.
