It's funny how sometimes, the most mauled and neglected bikes turn up to become some of the most beautiful custom builds, when reaching the right workshop. It's the case of an '82 Yamaha XS650 which ended up in the hands of brothers Chris and Rob of Chappell Customs.. and the resulting bike couldn't be a better proof.
The donor bike was in really bad conditions, and all that's left from the original is the frame and engine, with everything else rebuilt or ditched.
The remaining parts have been stripped of any speck of the old paint and got an impeccable new finish, including some engine covers receiving an awesome gold finish, making a nifty contrast with the black accents. We were amazed to see the seat pan painted in the same classic racing stripe pattern even under the very seat. Talking a bout a job well done...
New progressive springs went into the forks and piggyback reservoir shocks link the swingarm to the custom-made tail-loop, while updated brake components now ensure better stopping.
Aftermarket carbs, a complete rewiring job and a lightweight lithium-ion battery were also needed for a cleaner look and up-specced performance, and instrumentation was replaced by a miniature digital dash and modern lights.
Chappell Customs also went for an XS750 tank for two reasons: a chunkier look which served their purpose better and the extra fuel which is always welcome. The bike not only looks very nice, but it also sounds great.
