Saying that GM didn’t hit things spot on with the Chevrolet Volt would be a bit of an understatement, but the carmaker is out there trying to correct this. The second-generation Volt has recently been spied and we’ve got a batch of fresh photos for you.
The prototype is as shy as possible, but we can still guess some of the details under all that camouflage. As you can see, this is indeed a prototype, not a test mule, as the vehicle is changed compared to the current Volt.

Leaving the concealed front and rear fascia aside, perhaps the greatest transformation comes in terms of profile - the next Volt will probably adopt a more streamlined profile. This all means it will treat us with more of a hatchback rear end, thus getting closer to the Priu’s now-classic line.

Little is known about the tech side of the second-generation Volt story. We expect the platform to be a modified version of the current one, but the powertrain area is where the real improvements will be made.

One of the reasons for which the Chevrolet Volt, along with its European and Australian brothers (the Opel/Vauxhall Ampera and the Holden Volt) didn’t impress customers is its limited all-electric range - this sits at about 40 miles (km). GM is expected to push that to about 60 miles (km). We’ll remind you that the Voltec powertrain relies almost entirely on electric propulsion, even though the 1.4-liter “range extender” does help with spinning the wheels at times. By the way, the rumor mill sees the next Volt fitted with a downsized 1-liter engine.

While the next Chevy Volt should debut in 2016, GM is expected to come up with a larger Volt family. Aside from the standard model, we could get an affordable one, which should offer the performance of the current Volt for less money. Moreover, there could be an extended range version and perhaps a crossover.
