For some riders, that fact that Triumph have made so little modifications to some of their best-loved models may seem disheartening, but things are on the move. Slowly, but they move.
Triumph releases some official pictures of Speed Triple and Speed Triple R versions for 2013, but little seems to have changed, at least the first sight. The most noticeable element is the new exhaust position: it had to go lower to meet European standards and laws.
This move has also triggered two additional changes: first of all the center of gravity was lowered, adding to the stability factor. The second change addresses the very handling of the bike, as Triumph engineers have seen the opportunity to make some geometry modification.
That's why the 2013 Speed Triple and Triple R got slight rake and trail changes. The Triple's new specs now read 24.1º rake and 99.6 mm trail. The same thing happened to tre Triple R and the 2013 model comes with a 23.4º rake and 95.0 mm trail.
These new values will make the Speed Triple steer faster, while reducing a bit the instability of the Speed Triple R. The frames are lighter for both bikes and all the modification have finally lead to a 13 lbs (5.8 kg) shave-off, which is obviously good.
The Speed Triple comes in Phantom Black, Crystal White and Caribbean Blue, while its R counterpart replaces the blue with Matte Graphite, and adds some red sub-frame elements. Engines remained unchaged, the classic 3-cylinder units with 675 cc displacement and delivering 105 BHP.
