Even though it will remain in the same segment, the Stuttgart car maker has actually moved their smallest rear-wheel drive sedan more upscale from a number of points of view.

The new C-Class is longer, wider, taller, but at the same time lighter than the generation it replaces, thus making more room in the lineup for the recently-launched CLA.

At launch, the new model will be available with just three-engines, all them being carryovers from the current C-Class W204, but all of them will offer improved performance and a much better fuel consumption.

As a matter a fact, the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class will actually be the segment leader in terms of fuel consumption, aerodynamics and comfort.

The entry-level model will consist of the C 180, powered as before by a 1.6-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder with direct injection, paired with a newly-developed six-speed manual transmission.

Offering 156 hp and 250 Nm (184 lb ft) of torque, it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 225 km/h (140 mph), while its medium fuel consumption sits at 5 liters per 100 km (47 mpg).

The C 200 uses a two-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder with direct injection, also paired with a new six-speed manual transmission, while the 7G-Tronic Plus is optional.

Offering 184 hp and 300 Nm (221 lb ft) of torque, it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 237 km/h (147 mph), while its medium fuel consumption sits at 5.3 liters per 100 km/h (44.4 mpg).

The most fuel efficient model at start will be the C 220 BlueTec, powered by a 2.1-liter, turbodiesel four-cylinder that offers 170 hp and 400 Nm (295 lb ft) of torque, which is also paired in standard with a new six-speed manual transmission.

The diesel can reach 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.1 seconds and hit a top speed of 234 km/h (145 mph), while its medium fuel consumption sits at just 4 liters per 100 km/h (58.8 mpg).

After the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class reaches showroom in March 2014, more engine versions will complete the lineup, including the C 160 BlueTec with a 1.6-liter diesel from Renault - which should be the non-hybrid fuel consumption champion – the C 250 and C 300 - both with a turbocharged two-liter four-cylinder in various stages of power – a C 400 with a twin-turbocharged V6 and a host of other diesels, one of which being the 231 hp C 300 BlueTec Hybrid.

The C 63 AMG replacement is coming in Autumn, bringing a twin-turbocharged four-liter V8 with 460-485 hp and 650-700 Nm (479 – 516 lb ft) of torque, which will also be paired with 4Matic all-wheel drive as an option.

Optionally fitted with the Airmatic pneumatic suspension for the first time, the new C-Class will offer unprecedented comfort and road-holding, while the up to 100 kg (220 pounds) lower weight and the drag coefficient of up to 0.23 will make it the leader in its segment.

Later on we will dissect its new features compared with both its predecessor and its competitors, but for now if you need more information you can check out the attached press release.
