The 2020 GMC Sierra Heavy Duty has been redesigned from the ground up to combine even greater capability for towing trailers with style, and has been packed with the latest technology available on heavy-duty pickup trucks in general.

An even bolder exterior design is emphasized by the new signature lighting, which includes prominent so-called “light blades,” consisting of LED daylight driving lights. LED technology is used almost everywhere on the car, including for the new headlamps, taillights, optionally available fog lamps and other elements, such as the available roof marker lights.

The interior has been redesigned as well, now offering best-in-segment head- and leg room for the Crew Cab version. The driver benefits from an even higher driving position, while the optionally available head-up display is a first for its segment.

Towing fans will rejoice at the news that the model can now be had with a segment-first Allison 10-speed automatic transmission paired with the tried-and-true 6.6L Duramax turbo diesel. With 445 horsepower and a massive 910 lb-ft of torque at its disposal, the legendary Duramax engine now has increased cooling capacity mostly thanks to the introduction of a dual-path intake system that uses the prominent hood scoop to cool air. As before, dual rear wheels and single rear wheels configurations are available.

In 2012 unveiled the fourth generation of the Sierra pickup truck and offered it as a 2014 model-year in a few grades and cab options, such as the two-door 2500HD, also known as the Regular Cab.

While the four-door Sierra was fit for families, the Regular Cab was mostly designed to serve as a work truck. It could tow and haul as much as any other competitor from its segment and then some more. This ability was due to the new K2XX platform, which relied on a hydroformed chassis. Thus, thanks to its stronger underpinnings, the 2500HD Regular Cab was a true workhorse.

Unlike its four-door sibling Crew Cab, the Regular Cab version was available with fewer features and amenities in the lowest trim level. Still, it featured the same massive grille up front flanked by squarish-looking headlights. From its profile, the angular-shaped wheel arches, both front, and rear, were cut in the wide fenders. But the automaker still thought about its customers, workers or not, and fitted the vehicle with a separate bed in the back that didn't send vibrations to the cabin.

Inside, GMC installed a pair of cloth seats separated by a tall center console. Since safety was one of the customers' concerns, the carmaker offered them the possibility of installing a Bluetooth-compatible sound system. The squared-looking dashboard featured a broad instrument cluster where it hosted a wide range of gauges next to the big speedometer and tachometer.

To power this heavy-duty truck, GMC used either a gasoline 6.0-liter V8 or a 6.6-liter V8 turbo-diesel. Regardless of the engine option, customers had to stick to a six-speed automatic gearbox.

The fourth generation of the Sierra was a revolution in terms of technologies and construction methods and helped GMC to cut a big chunk from Ford's F-Series slice of the market.

Built to endure the toughest conditions, pull the heaviest weights for its class, and with a hydroformed chassis, the Sierra 2500HD Crew Cab was not just a worker's tool but a family vehicle as well. By switching from the older 900 platform to the new one, named K2XX, the automaker could provide not just a better truck but also a comfortable one if fitted with the Denali package.

The front of the car showed a broad chromed grille and big squarish headlights. However, only the cover lenses were in that shape since they covered the rounded lamps and the turn signals. The pickup boasted a chromed bumper fitted with two round fog lamps on the sides, depending on the trim level and options. From its profile, the Sierra featured angular-shaped wheel arches on the enlarged front and rear fenders. At the back, the separate bed helped customers get fewer vibrations inside the cabin, increasing comfort.

Inside, the automaker offered plenty of options to choose from. The truck was provided with either cloth or leather seats. In addition, GMC installed an infotainment system that supported Bluetooth connection with the mobile phone for calls and audio. With such amenities, it seemed just normal for the driver to enjoy buttons on the steering wheel. On the rear bench seat, there was room enough for three people, with no intrusion for the transmission tunnel since it was a body-on-frame construction.

To power this heavy-duty truck, GMC used either a gasoline 6.0-liter V8 or a 6.6-liter V8 turbo-diesel. Regardless of the engine option, customers had to stick to a six-speed automatic gearbox.

GMC released the third generation of the Sierra pickup-truck range in 2006 as a 2007 model-year for the 1500 series and the 2500 HD series in the following year as a 2008 model.

GMC had over a century of experience on the market. It couldn't outsell the Ford F-Series, but it was close and offered an excellent platform able to pull more than the 1500 series. For the 2500 HD (heavy-duty), the American carmaker used a new platform, the T900, which replaced the T800 and offered better solutions and more powerful engines than its predecessor.

Like its predecessor, the Sierra was available in a few body versions, starting with a chassis-cab and going up to the big crew-cab version. Its raked windshield at 57 degrees decreased the wind noise and the aerodynamic resistance, increasing the fuel-efficiency. To add a more dynamic appearance, the Sierra featured flared wheel-arches. The Regular Cab version featured a two-door cabin with either a bench or a pair of seats. The bed in the back was available in three sizes of 5.75' (1752 mm), 6.5' (1981 mm), and 8' (2438 mm) on three different wheelbases.

Inside, the GMC Sierra offered two or three seating positions, depending on the trim level and options. Like most of the pickup-trucks on the market, it provided a big dashboard, with a steering-column mounted gear-selector for the automatic transmission.

The manufacturer offered the Sierra with a choice of two engines paired as standard to a 4-speed automatic gearbox. It was available either as a 2WD or 4WD.

General Motors released the third generation of the Sierra pickup 2500 HD series in 2007 as a 2008 model year and offered it with a choice of three cabins.

It was already common to see the large, heavy-duty pickups used for weekends in the mountains or pulling trailers with boats or motorhomes on the highway. Most of them were crew-cabs, with four doors and a full house inside. The single-cab mainly was a work truck, while the Extended Cab was somewhere in between. It was still good to carry a family to the mountains, as long as it was a family with small children on board. For the 2500 HD (heavy-duty), the American carmaker used a new platform, the T900, which replaced the T800 and offered better solutions and more powerful engines than its predecessor.

Its raked windshield at 57 degrees decreased the wind noise and the aerodynamic resistance, increasing the fuel efficiency. To add a more dynamic appearance, the Sierra featured flared wheel-arches. The Extended Cab version featured two doors for the front passengers and another pair of rear-hinged doors behind them.

Like most of the pickups on the market, it provided a big dashboard with a steering-column mounted gear-selector for the automatic transmission. The rear seats were surprisingly good as long as the occupants were not very tall.

The third generation of the Sierra pickup 2500 HP showed up in 2007 as a 2008 model, and GMC built it in three cab versions.

With an increasing demand for full-size pickups and room for all family onboard, General Motors offered the Sierra with a four-door cab version named Crew Cab. Sure, it might be used as a workhorse for a crew during the week, but in the weekends, it was an excellent family companion pulling that full-size trailer behind without tearing a sweat.

The Crew Cab offered an easy ingress and egress from the car thanks to its full-size rear doors.

Inside, the dashboard looked closer to an SUV than to a work truck, but its rounded instrument cluster covered a panel with more dials than a regular car. On the tall center stack, the carmaker installed a couple of cup-holders and a large storage compartment. In the back, the flat bench offered room for three with enough leg- and headroom for adults, not just for kids.

GMC offered the Sierra with a choice of two engines paired as standard to a 4-speed automatic gearbox. Unlike the rest of the 2500 HD range, the carmaker offered the Crew-Cab version with a hybrid power as well.
