100+ years since the invention of the self-propelled car, three new engines battle for a place in the automotive future. Which one do you see in your car 10 years from now?
Audi introduced its brand new Q7 model at the 2006 Los Angeles Auto Show. Based on the Audi Pikes Peak quattro concept car, the all-new Q7 was equipped with a 'quattro' permanent all-wheel-drive system and FSI-developed engine units - 350-hp 4.2L V8 and 280-hp 3.6L V6. The tested model of Audi Q7 was introduced in Australia during 2006.
Dual front airbags, side airbags and head-protecting side curtains are standard equipment. Antilock brakes (ABS), electronic brake distribution (EBD) and electronic stability control (ESC) are also standard. Audible seat belt reminders are fitted to both front seats but were not eligible for bonus points.
The front seat belt buckles are mounted on the seats and the upper anchorages are adjustable. These features improve the fit of the seat belt. Pre-tensioners are fitted to the front seat belts to reduce slack in the event of a crash. A three point seat belt is fitted to the centre reat seat. This provides better protection than a two point (lap) seat belt.
Final conclusion:
The Audi Q7 scored 11.92 out of 16 in the offset crash test. The passenger compartment held its shape well except for footwell deformation. Protection from serious leg injury was marginal for the driver.
The vehicle scored 16 out of 16 in the side impact crash test and a further two points in the optional pole test.
Poor welding resulted in rupture of the footwell area. There was separation of the seam connecting the firewall to the footwell and failure of spot-welds in the footwell and its connection to the A-pillar. Audi have informed us that they have now improved control over this part of production but the car lost points for its performance in this area. Structures in the dashboard presented a potential risk to the knees and femurs of the driver.
