Spyshots: 2016 BMW 5 Series Touring Rolls into View

BMW just released the LCI version of the F10 5 Series so we shouldn't expect a new model for up to 3 years. However, that doesn't mean BMW is not already testing the new model.

Our most recent spyshots seem to suggest they didn't only start working on it, it's already undergoing road tests. How can we tell this is no ordinary 5 Series Touring? Well, the A-pillars have a different shape and so do the door handles.

Furthermore, the front wings are fitted with the air breather that we saw on the 4 Series and the 3 Series GT, a design feature that is meant to help reduce fuel consumption and it also reminds us of the Hofmeister kink.

The platform is likely to be shared to some extent with the G11 7 Series and the upcoming 6 Series models and it will also be extensively using CFRP (carbon fibre reinforced polymer) to lower the weight of the car and the fuel consumption.

Judging on recent developments, and estimating that the car will be a lot lighter on its feet, we could possibly even see the 1.5-liter engine under its bonnet, as an entry-level model.

Either way, expect the new 5 Series model to arrive no sooner than 2016.
