Even though the 5 Series just received a face lift, the engineers from Munich know that the upcoming model has to be even better than the current one. Therefore, testing of the future 5er already began around the Munich headquarters of BMW.
We already saw the new model in complete camouflage, being carried around on a flatbed trailer but that one was a Touring model. Today, we're bringing you the real deal, the Sedan version.
Even though this one is also heavily camouflaged, we can still make out some interesting details that let us know this baby is the new 5 Series. The door handles are different, the A-pillar has a new layout, whilst the front fenders have been fitted with air breathers.
On top of all that, there's a sharp horizontal edge over the front and rear side doors whilst the rear windows look flatter, with a lower slope. All of these design cues have been integrated into the new sedan as part of BMW's strategy of creation cars close to the Vision Connected Drive concept.
The platform will, most likely, be shared with the G11 7 Series and the upcoming 6 Series and all of them might share more parts than expected, in the rush to use more CFRP to lighten the loads.
In this regard, rumors say that the 3 new models will be sharing similar CFRP bonnets, trunk lids and other body panels, giving the word "modular" a complete new meaning.
Other rumors (that we find quite believable) say that the new B38 3-cylinder 1.5-liter engine family will be introduced on the new 5er, to help the BMW Group bring the overall CO2 emissions of its fleet down to the EU legislation limits.
While this won't sit too well with die-hard BMW fans, the move is necessary, both to comply with ever tightening regulation and to attract even more people to the Bavarian brand.
