Driving a Classic: Shea's 1972 BMW Bavaria

The BMW New Six was the series that relaunched BMW into the automotive world's spotlight. It had everything a Bimmer is supposed to have: excellent acceleration, good fuel economy and plenty of room inside.

In 1968 the first E3 2800 model was introduced and by 1977 several variations followed, with a different name for the US, 'Bavaria'. The naming scheme was also a marketing trick, to introduce reticent Americans to German engineering and legacy.

Tests, reviews and opinions ranging from Road & Track down to regular people, praised the new car, calling it 'delightful' and 'superb' on more than one occasion. The 2800 engine was powerful enough even for the US market and the Bavaria earned more respect and recognition.

For a die hard gear head, this is one of the best cars you can get and Shea Weidler's one lucky guy. After some troubles with his E28 5er, Shea decided to go even further into BMW history and get an E3 New Six.

His car was in pretty bad shape at first, but after 40 years what'd you expect? He got to work and today he has one of the best Bavarias we've ever seen. Fitted with Silhouettes and an air suspension, this car is one hell of an apparition. The gallery will tell you more about it.
