The MINI Cooper SD faces some strong competition these days, especially from the refined Volkswagen Beetle but also from other new contestants such as the Peugeot RCZ which is a rather new model in this segment. Auto Motor und Sport decided to do a comparo of the three.
First up we have the newcomer, the Peugeot RCZ HDI 160. This is a decent car, considering that it came from Peugeot. It has a sporty feel and the 2-liter diesel engine pushes out 163 HP and 340 Nm (250 lb-ft) of torque to the front wheels. With a combined fuel consumption of just 5.3 l/100km (44 mpg) the RCZ is a rather economical car.

The French creation is also filled with a lot of optional features and offers a lot of value for the money. The sporty feel is at home in this 2 seater and you'll feel like Schumacher on tight bends, even though you have a diesel engine under the bonnet.

The Volkswagen Beetle is already a legend in this segment. Fitted with the perfected version of the 2-liter TDI engine with a manual 6-speed gearbox  this little hatchback proved its worth many times. The fact that it has 4 seats is a great advantage and offer a lot of extra practicality.

The Cooper SD comes with the 2-liter 143 HP and 305 Nm (225 lb-ft) of torque and a mixed fuel consumption of just 4.3 l/100 km (54 mpg) and its the most fuel efficient. Furthermore, the go-kart feeling is still there, even though the car has a diesel engine under the bonnet.

According to Auto Motor Und Sport, the Beetle wins the contest due to its legacy and better functionality. The RCZ stands second for its sporty feel and the Cooper SD comes third.
